چکیده

SESSION VI: Animal Models Joseph Buxbaum July 23, 2015 // 12:00 pm EST Course Materials The purpose of these materials is to help provide an introduction to the Summer Institute session on animal models. The materials were designed to prepare trainees who are unfamiliar with research using animal models with the general background to get the most educational benefit from Dr. Buxbaum’s presentation. Toward this objective, we have prepared the following: (1) learning objectives for this session; (2) some key terms and concepts to become familiar with different methods of animal models research; (3) some broad review articles that are recommended reading. These materials could be considered “prerequisites” in preparing for Dr. Buxbaum’s presentation. In collaboration with Dr. Buxbaum, these materials were developed by the trainee group for this session: Allison Anacker (postdoc at Columbia; [email protected]); Hala HaronyNicolas (Instructor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; [email protected]); Matt Judson (postdoc at UNC; [email protected]); Ashley Stevens (doctoral candidate at University of Utah; [email protected]). Feel free to contact us with questions/comments.

O-10: A Marked Animal-Vegetal Polarity in The Localization of Na+,K+-ATPase Activity and Its Down-Regulation Following Progesterone-Induced Maturation

Background: Polarized cells are key to the process of differentiation. Xenopus oocyte is a polarized cell that has complete blue-print to differentiate 3 germ layers following fertilization, as key determinant molecules (Proteins and RNAs) are asymmetrically localized. The objective of this work was to localize Na+, K+-ATPase activity along animal-vegetal axis of polarized Xenopus oocyte and fo...

Pulmonary reactions to organic dust exposures: development of an animal model.

Acute inhalation of organic dusts such as cotton, hay, silage, grain, animal confinement, or compost dust can result in illness characterized by fever, pulmonary inflammation, chest tightness, and airway obstruction. These agricultural materials are complex mixtures of plant, bacterial, and fungal products. Elucidation of the time course of disease onset, the mechanisms of disease progression, ...

Agricultural Waste as Adsorbent for Removal of Chromium (VI) from Aqueous Solution

Background & Aims of the Study: Since the chromium (VI) is a toxic, carcinogenic and non-biodegradable element and can accumulate in the tissues, the presence and release of this element through the effluents is associated with dangerous effects on life cycle. Thus, it should be removed from the effluents. In the present study, biosorption of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutio...

Operant performance and cortical acetylcholine release: role of response rate, reward density, and non-contingent stimuli.

The relationship between acetylcholine (ACh) efflux in medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and performance in a visual discrimination task and a variable interval (VI) schedule of reinforcement was studied in rats. Animals were pretrained in one of the two tasks and then unilaterally implanted with microdialysis guide cannula into the mPFC. Animals were then dialyzed, during 12 min collection inter...

Behavioral momentum: the effects of the temporal separation of rates of reinforcement.

In Part 1 of the experiment, rats responded under a variable-interval (VI) 30-s schedule and a VI 120-s schedule, with each in effect for a block of consecutive sessions. That is, the two VI schedules were presented in successive conditions. In Part 2 the VI schedules alternated each day, and in Part 3 the schedules alternated within the session as a multiple schedule. For half of the rats in P...
